Michael, or Mick, as he prefers to be called, is originally from the UK, where he spent most of his working life in Oxfordshire. However, he has lived in Taiwan since 2013, currently residing in the beautiful and vibrant city of Kaohsiung. He is a highly accomplished leader with a robust background in engineering management, aviation, and professional training. Over his dynamic career, he has excelled in a diverse range of roles, blending technical expertise, strategic leadership, and a commitment to fostering organisational growth. His professional journey reflects a consistent ability to manage complex projects, lead diverse teams, and deliver measurable results across military, commercial, and academic settings.
PERFECT Manager - Leadership and Consultancy
Mick is the creator of PERFECT Manager, a leadership and management system designed to develop forward-thinking leaders across industries. Since launching it in Taiwan, he has delivered keynote talks, workshops, and consultancy for HR managers, executives, and trainers. The system, built on his own leadership acronym PERFECT (Power, Experience, Respect, Fun, Energy, Communication, Trust), combines his RAF, aviation, and corporate management experience with modern approaches to cross-generational communication, employee engagement, and strategic leadership.
PERFECT Manager has quickly gained recognition as a unique and practical framework for companies facing challenges in recruitment, retention, and leadership development. Mick has delivered both webinars and in-person workshops to corporate clients, educators, and HR leaders in Taiwan and internationally, positioning PERFECT Manager as his flagship professional venture.
Earlier Entrepreneurial Work - Interview English Ltd.
Before founding PERFECT Manager, Mick created Interview English Ltd. in the UK, where he designed and delivered specialised English courses for professionals in aviation, engineering, business, law, and medicine. He also provided technical proofreading services to clients in the aerospace, defence, and technology sectors. This work laid the foundation for his transition from language and technical training into leadership development, culminating in the creation of PERFECT Manager.
Aerospace Leadership and Consultancy
Mick's technical and managerial prowess is exemplified by his tenure as an Aviation Consultant, where he founded Instinct Aerospace Solutions Ltd. He spearheaded consulting projects for military and commercial aviation clients, specialising in project management, regulatory compliance, cost-efficient MRO solutions, and local representation in Asia for Frasers Aerospace, BuildAir and Apella SA. His leadership was instrumental in managing offset-funded initiatives and representing companies in Asia, driving quality, sales and technical support efforts.
As a Principal Engineer and Programme Manager with Goodrich Control Systems, Mick led transformative projects, including establishing Authorised Repair Centres (ARCs) globally. He managed technical investigations, modification programmes, and customer relationships, overseeing budgets ranging from £450,000 to £1.5 million. His responsibilities also encompassed producing detailed technical proposals, negotiating programme requirements with suppliers and clients, and maintaining product integrity in high-stakes environments.
Engineering Management Excellence
Mick's role as Aircraft Engineering Manager at CSE Aviation, Oxford (the largest General Aviation MRO company in Europe), highlighted his ability to manage operations at a strategic level. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, he ensured regulatory compliance (EASA Part 145, ISO 9001) and provided complete aircraft maintenance solutions for the Oxford Aviation Training fleet, Infoterra (Google Maps), and many private operators. He led the successful bid to win a £6 million contract for full support of the British Antarctic Survey's aircraft, encompassing base maintenance and Antarctic Operations. His achievements include driving cost reduction programmes, implementing efficiency improvements, and successfully managing a team of over 80 staff.
Distinguished Military Career
Mick's 23-year career in the British Royal Air Force (RAF) is marked by progressive leadership roles. As a Chief Aircraft Engineer for 216 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton, he managed the standards and welfare of 40 personnel while maintaining the RAF's TriStar fleet. His responsibilities included programming aircraft tasking, resolving engineering challenges, and presenting strategic plans to senior executives.
As the TriStar Airframe Systems Instructor, Mick designed and taught the comprehensive 30-day TriStar Airframe Systems Course, conducting training needs analyses, developing syllabi, and creating innovative training materials. His work enhanced the capabilities of RAF personnel and set a benchmark for technical education.
Engineering and Pilot Role in the British Virgin Islands
On loan to the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Mick served as the Engineer and Co-Pilot for a drug surveillance operation in the British Virgin Islands. As the sole engineer for a PA-31 Piper Navajo aircraft, he managed all maintenance, defect rectification, spares procurement, and hangar operations. He also gained an FAA Pilot Licence and flew over 400 sorties on anti-drug patrols and joint operations with the DEA, US Customs, US Coast Guard, and Royal Navy, as well as local BVI agencies. He transported VIP dignitaries, including royalty and Members of Parliament.
This role demanded technical precision, rapid decision-making, and coordination with international agencies, demonstrating his adaptability in complex and challenging environments. With over 800 flight hours, Mick showed his versatility as both an engineer and a pilot.
Operational and Technical Expertise
Mick has excelled in operational management roles, including Test Lab Manager for Magnex Scientific (which specialises in superconducting magnets for research and medical applications) and Engineering Controller for the VC10 and TriStar aircraft fleets. His technical acumen has been consistently demonstrated through optimising processes, improving resource allocation, and delivering engineering solutions aligned with organisational goals.
